Bush Approval Rating Down
The Washington Post runs numbers showing that President Bush’s approval rating is down to 59% having dropped 9 points in the last 18 days. As the story notes: That decline exactly mirrored the slide in public support for Bush’s handling of the situation in Iraq, which now stands at 58 percent. The rapid decline is pretty interesting. The story is short on the kind of details, however, that would provide some context. How does this approval rating compare to other presidents’ ratings at this point in their terms, for example? Inquiring minds want to know!

18 days… A few more “uranium-gates” and the stage will be set to ratchet up the primaries.

Doug,
You can’t beat Bush with a mythical candidate. And the democrats aren’t showing a keen grasp of any kind of strategic thinking in 2004. They have to get off the subject of foreign policy, but in a post-911 world, that may be difficult.
You can never say never, so I won’t say that they are doomed. But if we are talking about foreign policy in November of 2004, Bush will be getting a second term.

Hi, John. Every day that goes by without the discovery of the nuclear/biological stash in Iraq is another page in the Democratic foreign policy portfolio.
Why do you think Howard Dean is mythical?

Doug,
I don’t seriously believe that Saddam Hussein, after kicking out the weapons inspectors in 1998, said to himself “oh good, now I can go about my plan for unilateral disarmament.”
He was known to have these weapons stocks and he refused to give them up. He used them repeatedly.
Besides, that was only one reason to get rid of him. His continuous violations of the 1991 ceasfire agreement (that saved his ass)is more than enough justification in my view.
If the democrats think they are going to win the presidency by complaining about a war against a horrible dictator that we won with minimal casualities, then they are dumber then they look.
Howard Dean is a joke. If the democrats nominate that guy (and I don’t think they will - my money’s on Kerry), they deserve to lose.

You’re right, John. Howard Dean is a joke. Here’s the punchline: He raised more $7 million in the second quarter, surpassing all other Democratic candidates. From the National Review: “… a recent poll of likely New Hampshire voters by the American Research Group showed Kerry with 23 percent and Dean with 22 percent — a difference well within the poll’s margin of error of 4 percent.” I know I’m laughing!
