1897 Oscar Wilde is released from jail
On this day in 1897, writer Oscar Wilde is released from jail after two years of hard labor. His experiences in prison were the basis for his last work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol(1898).
In 1891, the Marquess of Queensbury denounced Wilde as a homosexual. Wilde, who was involved with the marquess’ son, sued the Marquess for libel but lost the case when evidence supported the marquess’ allegations. Because homosexuality was still considered a crime in England, Wilde was arrested. Although his first trial resulted in a hung jury, a second jury sentenced him to two years of hard labor. After his release, Wilde fled to Paris and began writing again. He died of acute meningitis just three years after his release.
Yesterday’s post about President Bush’s speech to the United Nations, marks the debut of a new author on this site. Chris knows his stuff, and has been publishing material by a mailing list for over a year now. Chris doesn’t know it, but his outspoken stance against the administration’s war (and build up to war) in Iraq is what inspired me to start this website last Spring. Chris will publish whenever his schedule allows, and on whatever topic he chooses. I think everyone (except for maybe Therapy Sessions) will enjoy reading his stuff. Please give him a warm welcome.
I reported in an earlier post that I’d been having web hosting problems. Well, they’re finally resolved. I’ve spent much of the last three weeks trying to sort out a supposed “upgrade” to my account. I finally got everything working yesterday, but only after I gave up on my old web host. I’ve added in a few posts that were made on the old site that you may have missed while the new site was resolving. I’ve moved on and hopefully won’t have to worry about the technical stuff for awhile.
I had problems with my web hosting provider last week and am still trying to get them ironed out. Please stay tuned as I hope to begin posting again today or tomorrow!
I’ll be on vacation until 8/4/03! I’m going to the Redneck Riviera (otherwise known as Pensacola Beach). I may check in and post a few items, but probably not. If anyone wants to tell Therapy Sessions why he’s just a greedy bastard out to keep poor folks down, please feel free. Otherwise the dialog will have to wait until I get back.
